The magic caves were born in Ardèche two million years ago. There are over one hundred, several of which are open to the public with guided tours of these subterranean miracles. The roots of modern man are here. 33.000 years ago mankind was so sophisticated it could produce the splendid wall paintings in the world-famous Chauvet cave.
In this Mediterranean land coloured by wild
thyme and the lavender, in Vallon Pont d'Arc, an amazing natural
stone arch spans the wonderful 37 km (25 mile) long Ardèche
river Gorges which attract thousands of canoeing and kayaking
buffs every year.
The Romans settled in the ancient city of Alba
la Romaine, and developed the vineyards which now cover the
area. In the shade of the well-conserved ancient villages,
today's wine makers invite you to savour their talents!
