Every
year in Spring the thousands of peach trees in flower make the
Eyrieux river valley breathtakingly beautiful - a "must"
for painters and photographers from all over the world. Higher
up the hills, the main crop is chestnuts. An unforgettable vision
when the leaves of the trees glow gold in the Autumn sun. In
the wars of religion in France in the 16th century between the
Roman Catholics and the Calvinist Reformers (the "Huguenots"),
Ardèche of the three valleys was one of the last bastions
of the Protestants which explains why there are so many old
fortified houses, hamlets and villages like Beauchastel, Coux,
Chalencon and Saint-Vincent-de-Barres in which the narrow streets
are ideal for shady summer-time strolls.
